What I remember the most about writing this song is that I didn’t think it was very good. I was insecure and embarrassed about sharing it with anyone. I felt the melody was too simple, and there weren’t enough musical dynamics in the song.
As far as the lyrics, since I was a young Christian and just coming alive to all of these amazing truths about “Christ In Me,” I guess I just thought everyone knew all this already, and these words would be too obvious. However, I finally sang it to Jill and she encouraged me that it was good!
Later, while hanging out with some of my friends in the early 1980s, one of them asked if I had written any songs lately. I rather sheepishly said, “Well, I have this little thing that I don’t think is much, but I’ll sing it for you anyway if you want.”
I sang it for them and the rest is history (Literally, since it’s so old!).
It amazed me that people were getting so blessed by this humble song! I once again realized that simple songs with meaningful lyrics are sometimes the best songs.
Now over 40 years later we still sing it, and is still a favorite of many! Go figure!
The message here, though simple, is profound. Being made One with God is probably one of the most amazing truths in the Bible. To think that He actually decided to make His home on the inside of us is mind blowing!
The Bible says that the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him (1 Cor. 6:17). It goes on to say that we are the temple of the Holy Spirit and that Christ Lives In Us – the hope of Glory.
In John, Jesus prayed the prayer that we should be One with Him. I used to think that He was talking about the church being in unity with each other. Although that is a worthy prayer, and definitely the cry of Paul’s heart on many occasions, this particular prayer of Jesus’ in John 17:21 was that we would be One With HIM.
I pray that they will all be one, just as You and I are one—as You are in Me, Father, and I am in You.
And may they be in Us so that the world will believe You sent Me.”
John 17:21
Jesus was praying that we would all one day experience the same oneness that He had with the Father.
The scripture goes on to say,
I have given them the glory You gave Me, so they may be one as We are one. I am in them and You are in Me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that You sent Me and that You love them as much as You love Me.
John 17:22-23
Paul said the mystery of the ages was Christ in us the hope of Glory. This is the amazing mystery that was accomplished through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Not only making us righteous and giving us bold access to the throne of God, but also God Himself making His abode in us. Wow! Amazing! He lives in us. Greater is He that is IN US than he that is in the world.
And we are members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones.
Ephesians 5:30
Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it.
1 Corinthians 12:27
There is no greater joy than enjoying fellowship with our creator, God Almighty. He lives and abides in us. His love is shed abroad in our hearts through the Holy Ghost. We are bone of His bone. We are the body of Christ. We are His hands, His feet, His mouthpiece.
Even as God sent Jesus, He now sends us and says to go and do what He did because now He’ll be IN US to do the works, and greater works.
His ultimate plan was to come to this earth, live a sinless life, take the sins of the world, die and rise again, all so He could break the chains of sin and hell, and come back down and live in us through the person of the Holy Spirit. Now He is alive in us, and now the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in us! Hallelujah!! I could preach all day on this marvelous truth!!
Let this song minister to you in a deep way as you commune with God and enjoy your fellowship and oneness with Him. He loves you! You are a part of Him and He is a part of you!
