Our dear friend, the legendary John Tesh, invited us to be interviewed, and we spoke very candidly together. He observed that losing a child breaks up a large portion of partners, because dealing with the pain and grief can just be too much for some couples. Then he said something about our book that beautifully described the desire we hold in our hearts. He said, “Because of your faith, you flipped it (the turmoil) around and turned it into…a Swiss army knife for dealing with grief.”—meaning, any tool you need for dealing with loss can be found in the pages of our book, When Loss Comes Close to Home.
In upcoming podcast episodes we will discuss why we began writing—at first just for ourselves—and later for other grievers needing help after their own loss. We found ourselves sharing our story and the ups and downs of our journey to healing.
‘He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.’ 2 Corinthians 1:4 NLT
As the Lord began to touch, heal and help us move forward, we felt a longing to help others we encountered, some who were stuck in their grief and couldn’t get out. We were still experiencing grief as well, but over many months and years as we continued the journey, our own pain began to lessen some. We were sensing God’s grace and comfort beginning to heal our broken hearts, and we wanted to share His comfort with others who also needed it so desperately.
We know that writing this book and ministering to those suffering from sorrow and grief, is born from the loss of our son Beau. By God’s help and grace, we’re taking the pain that we’ve experienced and using it to help others. Pain that’s not being used for anything is wasted, but when you’ve had heartache and pain, you can use it to help others find hope. We know Beau is rejoicing over that.
Everyone grieves differently and whether someone wants to drink themselves to death under a bridge, or their sorrow is so deep it causes physical pain, the God of all comfort is right there to help bring them through.
